Lifting Your Self-Esteem

Have you asked yourself lately just how you feel about you? If you have and are not terribly pleased with the answer, it may be time for you to start changing the way you think about yourself and your attributes. Positive thinking is a wonderful way to build your self esteem without having to make drastic life changes.

Most people have that little voice in their head that makes comments on everything they do. However, most people don’t think about the fact that they control just what that voice says. By changing the way you think, you’ll change that little voice along with it. Positive thinking is the first step to changing your own opinion of you, which will also affect what others think about you.

The key to changing how you think is to start small. You aren’t just going to wake up one morning, desperately in love with yourself and singing your own praises. Just like any other skill, positive thinking takes education, dedication, and practice.

Baby steps will get you where you want to be, so don’t be discouraged when you find yourself slipping back into self doubt. Your thoughts about yourself are just a result of past habits. Remember it took time to develop your negative view of yourself. It will also take time to develop a positive view of yourself.

Start by making a list of all your positive attributes. It doesn’t matter if they are physical characteristics you like about yourself or talents you have. Challenge yourself to add one positive comment about yourself every day. Look for opportunities to collect “evidence” of the good things about you. Instead of getting down on yourself all the time, find ways to be positive. As your list grows, you will find positive thinking taking over your life and your self-esteem improving.

Be aware of outside influences and how they have an effect on your self-esteem and thoughts. If you find yourself slipping more often around a certain group of people or situation, try to avoid being in that atmosphere. Attitudes and opinions are easily absorbed from people that you are around on a consistent basis. If you’ve got a friend or relative that constantly makes you feel bad about yourself, try to avoid them as much as possible.

If avoidance isn’t possible, make yourself aware of your thoughts at these times and put a more positive spin on things. You will not only influence yourself with your positive thinking, but may start to change how others are thinking, also.

Try to do something positive for someone else. You will certainly have a better attitude if your have employed positive thinking in your life, so use this good mood and extra energy to help others. The feeling of satisfaction you will get knowing that you have made a difference in someone else’s day will do wonders to boost your self esteem further.

If you find yourself slipping into negativity, go back to your list. Look at all the wonderful things about yourself and see just how much better you are than the negative thoughts you are entertaining. Do your best to replace self-doubt with positive thinking techniques. Everyone will falter on occasion, but do not let yourself fall completely back into your low self-esteem habits.

Once you have made the choice to use positive thinking to improve your self-esteem, stick with it. Do not allow others to influence what you think about yourself and constantly remind yourself just how special and important you are. Before you know it, your entire outlook on your life will change.

An excellent post with some great advice. It really struck a responsive chord with me since it reflects so many of the asset-based thinking principles brought to life in our book…Change The Way You See Yourself.

If you have some time you should visit our website. Like to know what you think.

Take a good look at your friends. Do they really want you to feel good about yourself or do they want you to feel lousy like they do?

Great post as always Robin. To stay positive and keeping up your self asteem is damn hard. I’ve got an offline cleaning company and online business and it’s sometimes a case of reguarly patting yourself on the back since noone else will, seriously.

If you’re just starting out online or been doing this a while, it’s very hard to explain to family and friends just what you’re trying achieve. It’s even harder when the $$$ are a long time in coming.

What took me a few months to realise is sticking to one task at a time instead of pitching for the next GREAT product. Trust me, you get a lot more done whilst remaining positive about your project at the same time.

Sometimes, family and freinds just don’t get it, and that’s fine. Just try not to get discouraged and start taking their advice. In our industry that’s a huge mistake.
