Choosing Courage
Do you sometimes find yourself in the position of allowing fear to drain your motivation? Then you're probably quite familiar with the frustration that always comes with abandoning your dreams - even if you want very badly to achieve those goals.
Watching your goals crushed and a lack of action does not have to be the final chapter of this story. I have said many times that if you change your thinking, you can change your life. How about doing that and changing the fear to courage and optimism and using these to your advantage? Choosing courage is not easy, but it can bring great rewards.
Most of us at one time or another have become used to seeing a negative in every situation. Do you often find that you are focusing on the challenges rather than the benefits of a situation? What that does is limit the taking of action because of the potential risks. Just wanting to do something and move forward does not always give you enough incentive to move past those fears, so you may tend to hold yourself back. The consequence is that you accomplish much less than you could.
If you will shift focus from the negative to what you may gain, you will probably find the courage to take action. Try making a list of specific things that hold you back and get them in the open. Consider exactly what holds you back. Monsters live in the dark, so bring them into the light of day and consider what you think may happen and why. Truly consider the possibilities of whether those things are likely to occur or is it only a possibility.
Make another list of the benefits you will gain by taking action. Be optimistic and very specific. Fear magnifies the negative and that in turn can make any positive outcome seem small and insignificant. You may need to work a little harder to stay focused on the positive.
Compare your two lists. This should give you a more balanced look at your options and bring clarity on whether to move forward or not. It is possible you have valid reasons to take no action right now. That is perfectly acceptable! If the possible negative outcome is more than you can accept right now, come up with less risky actions to take, or simply put it aside and revisit it at a later date.
If the time to take action is now, you might have to work on your courage some before diving in. Here's the thing: the only one with the power to keep you down is you. Motivation is, at its very heart, a determination to overcome any fear or excuse that holds you back.
Remember this because it is important. Do not fool yourself into thinking that you need to be free of all fear before taking action to achieve your goals. Any successful person would probably tell you that they moved forward in spite of their fear and lack of certainty.
Choosing courage will help you move past the fear that drains your motivation. It will give you strength to move forward and only you can decide to let this happen.

Hi Robin…
Great topic! I used to let challenges and fear take over my life… being a perfectionist I had a huge fear of “it not being good enough! ” But then I made myself just begin to take action because nothing is ever perfect! Anyway… I’m much better at doing that now, of moving out of my comfort zone, diving into the deep end… and I nearly always see challenges as opportunities.
