Are You Living A Sacred Life?

When you think of the word "sacred," do you picture something that is to be worshipped?  It could be, but it can also be a way of life.  Do you think life is sacred?  The fact that I get up every day and draw a breath is a sacred thing to me.  How about the rest of the day?  I have certainly found myself running around just trying to get by on a daily basis.  I forget to live with the awareness that my life is sacred and to treat it as such.  How many beautiful things do you think we all miss by living in a rush?  I'm thinking there are way too many of those moments.  How about we make a pact to not do that anymore?

I know it's easy to get caught up in being busy.  There are a lot of modern gadgets that help promote the busy-ness by extolling the virtues of time saving and labor saving features.  How ironic is that?  Life is more stress filled and chaotic than ever.  There is a way to calm most of the stress by taking a more gentle approach to life.  You can have a life that is infused with spiritual strength and purpose each moment of the day.

The simplest things are usually the best.  Here are three of them that could help you live a more sacred life:

1)            Stop for a moment.  You can't find sacredness in your life if you spend the majority of your time in hyper drive.  You're going so fast you are just going to fly right by any hint of the sacred!  Stop doing that and make a habit of stopping every once in awhile during the day to let go of stress and reconnect with your inner self.  It doesn't have to be more than a moment or two.  Just take a breath and listen to your spirit.

2)            Turn off the autopilot.  How's that heavy fog around your life feel?  A little scattered, maybe a bit disconnected?  You are on autopilot.  You are doing what you do today simply because it is what you did yesterday.  If you want to experience life at a deeper, more sacred level, you have to wake up and be aware of your spiritual self.  Once you stop for a moment as mentioned above, expand your awareness of everything around you.  You are a spiritual being having a physical experience, NOT the other way around.  Several times throughout your day, come to an awareness of your place in the universe and what a wonderful journey you are having in this life.

3)            Feel every joy.  Once you stop for a moment and turn off the autopilot, include a moment to find the joy in everything around you.  Find the joy in the experience, in what you see, hear, taste, smell and feel.  Savor your breakfast in the morning rather than eating on the run.  If the freeway becomes a parking lot on the way home from work, listen to some beautiful music and sing at the top of your lungs.  Whether you can carry a tune in a bucket or not, you should always sing like no one is looking!

These sound pretty simple and they are.  It also becomes easier when you do it on a regular basis.  You will notice a shift in how you view the world.  Everything will be quieter, less chaotic and you will learn to see the beauty around you.  Living a sacred life means nourishing your spiritual self.  You will find more meaning and serenity once you do that.
